My First Ever Blog Entry...EVER

We no longer see the world as a single entity. We've moved to cities and we think the economy is what gives us our life, that if the economy is strong we can afford garbage collection and sewage disposal and fresh food and water and electricity. We go through life thinking that money is the key to having whatever we want, without regard to what it does to the rest of the world.

Every day is Earth Day.

We're finally going to get the bill for the Industrial Age. If the projections are right, it's going to be a big one: the ecological collapse of the planet.

The magnificence of mountains, the serenity of nature - nothing is safe from the idiot marks of man's passing.

The human race will be the cancer of the planet.

For 200 years we've been conquering Nature. Now we're beating it to death.

All across the world, in every kind of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather patterns and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long-running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it's here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster.

In its broadest ecological context, economic development is the development of more intensive ways of exploiting the natural environment.

I drive a hybrid. Tipper and I got a Lexus hybrid. And we have a couple of Priuses in the family with our children. And I encourage people to make environmentally conscious choices because we all have to solve this climate crisis.

The packaging for a microwavable "microwave" dinner is programmed for a shelf life of maybe six months, a cook time of two minutes and a landfill dead-time of centuries.

To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed.

We must be certain that the repair to the environment is sufficient to allow wild species to recover and survive.

When we Indians kill meat, we eat it all up... When we build houses, we make little holes. When we burn grass for grasshoppers, we don't ruin things. We shake down acorns and pine-nuts. We don't chop down the trees.

The more we exploit nature, The more our options are reduced, until we have only one: to fight for survival.

We won't have a society if we destroy the environment.

Our personal consumer choices have ecological, social, and spiritual consequences. It is time to re-examine some of our deeply held notions that underlie our lifestyles.

English is such a deliciously complex and undisciplined language, we can bend, fuse, distort words to all our purposes. We give old words new meanings, and we borrow new words from any language that intrudes into our intellectual environment.

The universe is not required to be in perfect harmony with human ambition.

We generate our own environment. We get exactly what we deserve. How can we resent a life we've created ourselves? Who's to blame, who's to credit but us? Who can change it, anytime we wish, but us?

The blunt truth about the politics of climate change is that no country will want to sacrifice its economy in order to meet this challenge, but all economies know that the only sensible long term way of developing is to do it on a sustainable basis.

We've poured our poisons into the world as though it were a bottomless pit. and we go on gobbling them up. It's hard to imagine how the world could survive another century of this abuse, but nobody's really doing anything about it. It's a problem our children will have to solve, or their children.

All I'm saying is that there is a price to be paid at the sharp end. environmentally and everywhere else. for the food that is produced in a particular way.

We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive.

Scan any newspaper for stories about, say, the environment, and you will quickly discover that many journalists are predisposed to consider environmental activists the 'good guys' and oil company presidents and loggers the 'bad guys.' Or watch all the junk science television news specials about pesticides, food additives, breast implants, nuclear power, and global warming. Reporters are reputed to be natural-born skeptics, but they almost never challenge the alarmists on these important issues.
